Living plastic free seemed like a large but attainable goal in 2025. I did not understand the ramifications and extent of how much plastic there is in this world and in my own life. Perhaps it is an unattainable goal? Even though I have been cooking from scratch, living a homestead lifestyle, and trying to be as health conscious as possible, if you read the book Plastic Free by Beth Terry, you will definitely swallow the red pill! Once you see it, you can’t go back. Plastic is everywhere! And its infiltration goes into everything you can imagine! From art, to your vehicle, to your clothing, and of course, yes, your food. Plastic has infiltrated every aspect of our modern life!
I must admit that I have not finished Beth’s book yet. It’s a bit heavy. I will finish it, but I just wanted to put this up as a small warning. It’s a little bit of a downer. No shade on her very capable writing ability, well spoken tone, and authoritative references within the book. I am enjoying the book! It just is a little bit like I said disheartening.
So with all that said, I am still embarking on attempting a plastic free life! I do hope that you will join me on this journey!
If you have read this far you must be interested in living plastic free!
This is because, obviously, some things are more easily remedied than others.
For this week, I will say I have some good fixes!
When you need to wrap your food to place into lunch boxes, storage drawers, or your refrigerator, cotton food wraps are an excellent solution!
These are not a new product! They have been used by ancient Egyptians to cover foods and large jars for millennia.
Beeswax wraps Often have pine resin or soy flakes added to them. Sprouted Dreams cotton food wraps do not! they are 100 percent beeswax! Beeswax helps to preserve the foods wrapped inside, they also offer antimicrobial barriers to help keep food fresh longer.
Sprouted Dreams food wraps are available in 3 sizes: small, large and jumbo. They can be purchased in either of my shops on Etsy or TikTok.
As for me this week, I just purchased a bamboo handled toothbrushes that have natural bristles. The Bristle topic was a little bit confusing! They are made from castor beans. However when you formulate the castor beans into an oil and make the bristle structure, it’s called nylon 1010. This has more to do with the chemical structure that is created. It’s completely biodegradable and natural and I found them to be an extremely comfortable toothbrush! They’re reasonably priced and a box of four is made to last you all year! I strongly suggest you give these a try. Eliminating your plastic toothbrushes are a big source
of plastic that you put into your body each day. You grind those bristles down on your teeth and then swallow. You can imagine how much plastic this adds directly to your body over a lifetime of tooth brushing twice a day!! It’s an easy fix to change. Here is the Amazon link ( No affiliate, just my actual recomendation)
I always wear long sleeve dress shirts because I work outside and the shirt helps to keep the sun off. I am changing to all natural fibers. The feel of linen is terrific! Cotton is easily available, but I prefer Linen if I am given a choice. Often I buy used so end up with a lot of cotton. I bought what I thought was a linen shirt on Amazon. Linen was in the title of the listing. After receiving the shirt I looked back again at the listing and saw that it showed it was 100 percent cotton. If this is 100 percent cotton I am a fish! It feels very plasticky! It is my opinion that it has quite a lot of polyester, rayon, some sort of petroleum based fiber in it. Not just a little either! So these shirts will be returned.
I recently watched a Youtube video about a company called Thredup. Honestly they seem to be doing very good work! And they had some lovely linen shirts for sale. This is where I will be buying my new / used shirts from now on! Again, here’s a link, for ThredUp, no affiliation, just my honest recommendation.
I am slowly changing my clothing over to all natural fibers. And I really love the feel of linen! The way it wears, the way it feels, it’s one of my favorites!
I hope that this article opens your eyes to seeing plastic in its many guises. Watch the blog here for lots of updates and my Tik Tok for plenty more!
