Embracing Change with Purpose: A Gentle Roadmap After Loss
Loss can leave us feeling scattered, like a house that’s been left untended for too long. The rooms feel bare, the rhythm of daily life feels off, and everything seems just a little bit wrong. I know that feeling well. When your heart is heavy, even simple things like organizing your home can feel overwhelming — but small, gentle steps can help you begin to feel steady again.
A home is only as much as the heart that lives in it. When our hearts are hurting, it’s natural for everything around us to feel out of place too. I’ve found that slowly bringing order back to my spaces has become one of the quiet ways I care for myself during difficult seasons.
Here are some of the small things that have helped me recently:
Finding Quiet Moments In cottage life, there’s no better place to sit with heavy feelings than under the tree by the porch with a cup of hot tea. When loss comes, I try to give myself permission to simply sit quietly for a while. No big plans, no fixing everything at once — just a few minutes to breathe and let my heart catch up. These small pockets of stillness can be surprisingly nourishing.
Taking Stock and Letting Go I start by walking through each room and gently noticing what’s there. Some things still bring comfort. Others have become burdens. I ask myself: Have I used this in the last two years? Does it still feel like mine?
It might mean letting go of an old cookbook I no longer reach for, or clothes that have been sitting untouched. I don’t do it all at once — just a few things at a time. Each small release creates a bit more space and a bit more peace.
Creating Small Order I’ve been picking up the little scattered pieces — notes, supplies, half-finished projects — and putting them into one box. It doesn’t solve everything, but it gives me one small corner that feels calmer. When life feels chaotic, having even one tidy spot can feel like a deep breath. When you can’t decide, put it in a box. You’ll feel like you’ve accomplished something, and made the house more tidy.
Cleaning as Quiet Healing There are days when getting down on my hands and knees to scrub the floor feels like the only thing I can control. It’s not about making the house perfect. It’s about doing something with my hands that brings a small sense of order back into my world. If tears come while I’m cleaning, that’s alright too. They’re part of the process.
Finding a New Rhythm Over time, these small acts help us rebuild a gentler connection with our home. The cottage doesn’t have to look the same as it did before. It can grow into a new kind of haven — one that holds both the memories we keep and the quieter space we need now.
Closing Thought If you’re walking through a season of loss right now, please be gentle with yourself. You don’t have to fix everything today. Start with one small thing — a cup of tea on the porch, five items to let go of, or one corner that needs tidying. Each little step matters more than you might think.
From my cottage to yours,
Abigail
