I absolutely love doing laundry by hand — yes, really!
We’ve tried every off-grid laundry system under the sun:
Two WonderWash hand-crank washers (amazing until the handle snaps — still worth it)
A regular top-loader on the generator (graywater fed a row of cottonwoods)
And then the queen: our Staber top-load/high-spin machine that’s been going strong for almost 15 years.
The Staber is stainless steel, built like a tank, and the manual literally says “the average housewife can fix it.” I called them more than once: “Hi, I’m the average housewife — help!” New fuse here, new dial there, still kicking.
Here’s the golden rule wherever you live: use every drop of water at least twice.
In California that’s survival. Where you are, it’s just smart. Rinse water → trees. Shower water → washer bucket. Tiny apartment? There are mini machines you can fill with warm bathwater so your clothes get proper agitation but you’re still using graywater.
Spin as hard as humanly possible before line-drying — the Staber spins so fast clothes are practically dry when they come out. In winter I’ll beg dryer time from family for jeans and towels, but 95% of the year it’s the line or indoor racks in the attic. They can take a week — who cares?
Hang smart (I made a whole YouTube series on this — link below)
Wooden pins > plastic Please ditch the plastic! Wood CAN stain if they’re new.after about a month on jeans & towels they won’t bleed any color
Sun is the ultimate disinfectant for your skin microbiome — get those clothes outside!
If you think color fades, it wasn’t colorfast to begin with. My high-desert sun hasn’t destroyed anything in three decades. (ok maybe paint, but not the clothes)
Every time I pin up a shirt I think of every other human who has ever hung laundry in the history of the world. We’re all out there together, shaking out socks, cursing missing pins, smelling that sun-dried smell.
So grab your basket. I’m right there with you!
